AHRQ Views Blog: At AcademyHealth’s Annual Meeting, Exchanging Ideas on Transforming Healthcare Delivery
In a new blog post, AHRQ Director Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D., M.H.S.A., highlights AHRQ’s participation in the upcoming 2023 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting. The need to transform healthcare delivery systems is obvious, Dr. Valdez asserts, and AcademyHealth’s annual meeting is a unique opportunity for health services researchers to exchange ideas about improving healthcare and the well-being of patients and healthcare professionals. At this year’s event, Dr. Valdez will chair two expert sessions: Averting the Impending Storm: Health System Transformation and Aging Well and Rekindling the Patient Safety Fire: AHRQ’s Patient Safety Agenda. Several AHRQ staff members, meanwhile, will participate in presentations ranging from the agency’s support for reducing healthcare’s impacts on climate change to lessons learned about disruptions in care caused by COVID-19. AHRQ Provides Updated Data on U.S. Health Systems
AHRQ’s Compendium of U.S. Health Systems, the first publicly available database to track trends in health system affiliation and consolidation over time, has been updated to include data from 2020 and 2021. Data on 635 U.S. health systems and hospitals—now available for 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021—may be used by policymakers, health system leaders and researchers to analyze the changing healthcare landscape or measure the growing influence of systems. The Compendium contains provider-level data that can be easily linked to other data sources to facilitate systems research. The Compendium is a product of AHRQ’s Comparative Health System Performance Initiative, developed to explore how healthcare delivery systems promote evidence-based practices in delivering care. Access the Compendium as well as a Health Affairs blog post on the updated resource. Register for an AHRQ webinar on July 12 from noon to 1 p.m. ET. to learn more.
New Research Summary Highlights Potential of Health Information Technology To Advance Patient Safety
Improving Healthcare Safety by Enhancing Health Information Technology and Health Information Exchange (PDF, 953 KB) is the second in a series of AHRQ publications that summarize the agency’s investments in patient safety research as a pathway toward safer care. Research has shown that health information technology (HIT) and health information exchange (HIE) make it possible for healthcare providers to safely and securely access and share information about a patient’s health, such as patient history, vital signs, diagnoses, medications and disease progression. Since 2000, AHRQ has supported 42 patient safety projects related to HIT and HIE. This new publication summarizes AHRQ’s investments in this promising pathway toward better care, including examples of project findings and products, collective outputs and impacts of this work.
