a Functional score ranges from 1 (worst ability) to 7 (full function). Score zero was coded to 1. Score gain is the difference in discharge score from admission score. The population includes rehabilitation facility patients who were admitted as initial rehabilitation and discharged to community in each data year. "Discharge to community" were discharges to home, board and care, transitional living, and assisted living.
b Average of FIM scores 39A-39M, including self-care (eating, grooming, bathing, upper body dressing, lower body dressing, toileting), sphincter control (bladder control, bowel control), transfers (bed, chair, and wheelchair, toilet, tub and shower), and locomotion (walk/wheelchair and stairs).
c Average of FIM scores 39N-39R, including communication (comprehension and expression) and social cognition (social interaction, problem solving, and memory).
d Average of all FIM scores, 39A-39R (motor and cognition).
