a Consistent with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Indicators software, excludes newborns weighing less than 2,000 grams and newborns with injury to brachial plexus or with osteogenesis imperfecta. Rates prior to 2004 are not reported because of International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9-CM) coding changes.

b Rates are observed rates and are not adjusted for gender or severity.

DSU - Data do not meet the criteria for statistical reliability, data quality, or confidentiality.

State estimates are from the State Inpatient Databases (SID), and not all States participate in HCUP. Estimates for the total U.S. are from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, which is drawn from the SID and weighted to give national estimates.
