a Includes visits for which the patient had a sole diagnosis of a common cold (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision code 460.0, 465, or 472.0) and for which antibiotics were prescribed or continued. Population is U.S. Census Bureau estimated civilian noninstitutional population on July 1 of the two data years. Ambulatory medical care visits include visits to office-based physicians, hospital outpatient departments, and emergency departments.

b Race data were missing for about 20–30% of visits for a cold in which an antibiotic was prescribed in 2007–2008 and 21.7 % of visits in 2008–2009. Missing data were imputed, and standard errors were inflated consistent with the guidance in "2007 NAMCS Microdata File Documentation," ftp://ftp.cdc.gov/pub/Health_Statistics/NCHS/Dataset_Documentation/NAMCS/doc07.pdf.
