a Major depressive episode (MDE) is defined as a period of at least 2 weeks when a person experienced a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities and had a majority of the symptoms for depression as described in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Estimates of levels of perceived help exclude persons with unknown perception of help information. Due to MDE questionnaire changes, estimates since 2008 are no longer comparable to estimates in previous years.
