Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Center for Financing, Access, and Cost Trends (CFACT), Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS).

National CAHPS® (Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) Benchmarking Database (NCBD).

National Denominator

U.S. civilian adults who are current smokers and who had a routine checkup in the past 6 or 12 months, as appropriate.

National Numerator

Subset of the denominator who indicated they had received advice to quit smoking.

Comments

The allowable responses to MEPS question about smoking changed in 2003. Therefore, reported national rates may not be comparable with earlier years.

The National Table reports data from the MEPS Self-Administered Questionnaire (SAQ). Nonrespondents and "Don't Know" responses were excluded from the analysis.

Estimates are age adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population.

This measure is referred to as measure 1-3c in Healthy People 2010 documentation.

Comments

Estimates are age adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population, except where indicated. Total, race, ethnicity, gender, and family income are adjusted using three age groups: 20-44, 45-64, and 65 and over; education is adjusted using age groups 25-44, 45-64, and 65 and over.
